Abstract. The surface drag is an integral part of the general circulation of the global atmosphere. The total drag consists of several components related to the structure of the surface and its orography. The focus here is on the role of the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer which is influenced by buoyancy and the rotation of Earth. A new diagnostic proxy to investigate the magnitude of the surface friction in global models is presented and the climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) are evaluated regarding this aspect.
