'The research infrastructure is threatened'

Published Jul 17, 2020

In a recent opinion piece published in Svenska Dagbladet (SVD) members of Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI), including Prof. Henningson, alert public about low governmental contribution to the national research infrastructure.

Contributions to the national research infrastructure have been eroded for a long time - an effect of the Swedish currency being weak and large funding for international infrastructures. Now new funds are needed in the autumn budget to avoid a major setback for research, RFI  members write.

'The Swedish Research Council announces funding for research infrastructure of national interest every two years. The next call is in 2021, but at present there is no funding for it. If no additional funds are provided, the authority will have to cancel the call, with serious consequences for Swedish research. The funding period for 17 of our national research infrastructures ends in 2021–2022, and they will not be able to apply for continued funding.'
