FLOW Autumn School on Fluids & Surfaces

The dynamics and transport properties of liquids, droplets and bubbles are strongly influenced by their interactions with complex surfaces. Understanding these nontrivial fluid-surface interactions is critical in many applications, from small microfluidic and biological systems to large engineering and environmental systems. The topic is rich with intriguing physics that can be treated using a range of mathematical, experimental, and numerical techniques derived from fluid mechanics, chemical engineering, materials science, and soft matter.

This school offers early-career researchers (PhD students, postdocs, researchers) a comprehensive, in-depth course on fluid-surface interactions. While the primary audience is those with a background in fluid mechanics, applicants from diverse fields are welcome.

The course is free of charge for admitted students and includes lunch, beverages, and snacks.

PhD students will also have the opportunity to work in pairs on a project, and upon successful completion, will receive 3.5 ECTS credits.

Topics:

  • Part 1 (Theory): Introduction to interfaces, surface-tension-driven flows, transport across interfaces, interface rheology, wetting, impregnation, textured surfaces, dynamics of interfaces, interfacial instabilities.
  • Part 2 (Experimental techniques): Preparation/characterisation of complex surfaces, atomic force microscopy imaging, force measurements, techniques for measuring slippage.
  • Part 3 (Numerical techniques): Surface thermodynamics, derivation of the Cahn-Hilliard and van der Waals equations, and numerical methods using the phase field and volume of fluid methods. Special focus on solid surfaces and contact lines.
