Abstract: We make direct numerical simulations of finite size fibres and finite size spheres in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, to investigate how particle isotropy affects the flow. The size of the particles is chosen to be within the inertial range of the flow. We find that the two particle types have similar effects on the the bulk properties of the flow. However, a scale-by-scale analysis reveals different stories in the inertial range of scales; fibres disrupt Kolmogorov’s energy cascade whereas spheres leave it largely untouched.
