Abstract: Artificial extracorporeal organ support devices (such as in heart-lung and dialysis machines) are used in the treatment of patients with severe heart and/or respiratory failure and patients suffering from severe acute or chronic renal failure. Exposure of the blood to artificial surfaces may in combination of the local flow-induced forces acting on blood components (cells and macromolecules) often lead to theonset of inflammatory processes along with coagulopathy and endothelial stress. Our underlying hypothesis is that fluctuating blood flow with its unsteady mixing and stress characteristics is key in the pathological processes observed in extracorporeal organ support treatments. In this presentation I will address how we translate clinical questions to basic fluid mechanics and back to clinic with the purpose to avoid blood flow-dependent adverse events in patient treatment and improve treatment efficiency.
