VR Grant for a new research environment on Hybrid multiscale modelling of transport phenomena
FLOW researchers in collaborations with colleagues at SeRC (Swedish e-SCience Research Centre) and WWSC (Wallenberg Wood Science Centre) have been awarded 24 MSek from the Swedish Research Council to build a new multidisciplinary research environment. The title of the application is “Hybrid multiscale modelling of transport phenomena for energy efficient processes”, with Luca Brandt as Principal Investigator and co-applicants Anna-KArin Tornberg, Berk Hess, Dan Henningson, Erik Lindhal, Fredrik Lundell, Lars Berglund, Olof Runborg and Shervin Bagheri.
Only 18 out 222 applications in the field of natural and technical sciences, a success rate of 8%, have been granted.
The aim of this proposal is to establish a multidisciplinary research environment to model complex transport phenomena in fluid suspensions, predict properties of flows over hierarchical interfaces, and design surfaces to maximize heat transfer, e.g. boiling. This will be achieved by combining computational fluid dynamics on the macroscopic scale with molecular dynamics for nanoscale particles and surfaces.

"The design and fabrication of materials can dramatically enhance the efficiency of energy-conversion and manufacturing processes that depend on flowing fluids. Examples include cellulose production and micropatterned surfaces that reduce flow resistance or enhance phase-change heat transfer. We will address the lack of high-fidelity models and develop capabilities for capturing how the underlying microscopic physiochemical processes interact with the macroscopic flow and transport phenomena. Applications include targeted material design and improved energy efficiency in production, biomimetic drag reduction and efficient heat transfer.
We will merge research from two major modeling communities (FLOW, SeRC) with an excellent application center (WWSC) to attack entirely new classes of research problems in method development and key energy applications. We will emphasize education of PhDs in areas where both academia and industry need more competence. The proposed activities will therefore have impact well beyond our immediate environment."
